AS A supporting program in the theme of “Cinema and the City”—which is the fourth focus of Karbon online journal published in January 2008—a series of film screenings and discussion was held in November 2007, in collaboration with Kineforum, an alternative cinema in Jakarta, located in Studio 1 of the Studio 21 chain in Taman Ismail Marzuki, central Jakarta.

The films screened in the program were seven Indonesian films from the New Order to this day, which we consider as representative of the changes in the city. All the films were borrowed from the collection of Sinematek Indonesia, selected by Ardi Yunanto (www.karbonjournal.org), Eric Sasono, one of the writers for the Focus, and Lisabona Rahman, program coordinator of Kineforum. The films are Si Doel Anak Modern (Sjuman Djaya, 1976), Opera Jakarta (Sjuman Djaya, 1985), Cintaku di Rumah Susun (Nya Abbas Akup, 1987), Taksi (Arifin C Noer, 1990), Eliana, Eliana (Riri Riza, 2002), Mengejar Matahari (Rudi Soedjarwo, 2004) and Foto, Kotak dan Jendela (Angga Dwimas Sasongko, 2006).

Besides screening the films, in which during the eight days of screening 323 people attended, we also held a discussion. Moderated by Mirwan Andan, a researcher from ruangrupa, the discussion, attended by around ten people, invited Eric Sasono and Veronica Kusuma to come as speakers. Both speakers were writers for Karbon’s Focus of “Cinema and the City” and during the discussion they presented and discussed their essays with the audience.
