In Padang, West Sumatra, the motorbikes perhaps outnumber the citizens: everywhere you go, you’re bound to find an “ojek” (motor-taxi) base. At Padang Big Market (May 24), another base has been set up with a simple signage, a little space, and a motorbike. The base adds a special tinge to the street vendors’ activities in the afternoon. Usually the area under the flyover will be full of street vendors or idle people hanging around. Not so for the area under the Slipi Jaya flyover, West Jakarta, where a small prayer space is managed by the group Forkabi (Communication Forum for Betawi Youth). The “prayer house,” Musholla Ma’aruf, has been there for around four months. Ardi Yunanto | June 2009

Ms. Yayah is an itinerant masseur living on Jl. Ngasem, Yogyakarta. She uses her scooter not only as her means of transportation, but also as her means of promotion. She does not distribute photocopied ads on the street, but simply puts the ad on the scooter. Whereever she goes, the ad goes with her, promoting her service. Edwin Dolly Roseno | June 2009
