POISONOUS TREES. A sign on Diponegoro Street, Bandung, explains to the public about the danger of consuming the sap, seeds, and leaves of the Bintaro trees. It is strange how the city government of Bandung decided to plant such poisonous trees in a public space that is always visited by a large crowd on Sundays, as Diponegoro Street is near the Gasibu sport park, where people go to do sport and shop. Success grows out of struggle, fame grows out of fight. Manohara, who “was” married to the Kelantan prince, was the talk of the town—and she still is even today. She now plays in a number of films and her name has been used as fashion brands for bags and Moslem veils. Now you can also find her name on a public bus in Jakarta, the 44 Mikrolet that runs from Jatinegara to Karet and back. The typeface used is not unlike that of a horror movie—perhaps to remind us of her (alleged) pains. Mirwan Andan | October 2009 |

The fire at the main facility of the State Electricity Company PLN at East Jakarta on Tuesday (Sept. 29) created blackouts in many areas in the Capital City of Jakarta. A number of traffic lights stopped operating, too. The traffic light at the Tebet Raya crossroad, South Jakarta, displayed all of its three lights simultaneously: a rare moment, which inevitably caused confusion and traffic jam. Two kids were chatting on the railway as dusk was approaching in Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday (September 16). Playing on the railway tracks has been a daily activity for these children because of the lack of playing space for them. The distressing thing is the looming threat of the speeding train, which the children might fail to notice when they are deep in their games. Agus Bebeng | October 2009 |
